Project:

Decentralized solar energy supply for a wastewater treatment plant in a rural community in Jordan

Country:

Jordan

The communities in the Jordan Valley are among the poorest in Jordan. Insufficiently treated wastewater and overflowing septic tanks represent a significant health risk for the local population. The Global Nature Fund Foundation has now implemented a pilot project in Jordan, which has significantly improved the situation. Since electricity is very expensive and scarcely available in this region, a photovoltaic system was set up for the proper operation of a sewage treatment plant, which now covers over 90% of the required electricity demand. With the cost savings, spare parts and modernizations, as well as the preliminary chemical testing of the wastewater can be financed. The environmental situation was drastically improved for around 6,000 households. The Jordanian government has already expressed its interest in further such systems.
