With the Project:
“Water for All”: Rainwater Harvesting Systems as means to fight poverty and promote development in indigenous communities in Mexico
The rainwater purification plant, called "Agua del Cielo Mazahua", has a capacity of about 3,000,000 liters and also has a bottling plant that produces up to 48 bottles per minute with the aim of providing clean and safe water for indigenous families in Mexico. More than 11,000 indigenous families have benefited directly from the installation of 4,372 rainwater harvesting and purification systems in seven states of the Mexican Republic.
In Mexico it is estimated that 46.7% of the total population live in poverty, of which 11 million people live in extreme poverty, lacking even basic public services and the necessary infrastructure to meet their basic needs. Seven out of every ten persons that identify themselves as indigenous do not have access to basic services in their homes, including access to safe drinking water and sanitation facilities.
The Patronato Pro Zona Mazahua has sought to generate solutions to guarantee access to reliable and sustainable sources of clean drinking water for Mexico's indigenous communities, which have suffered institutional neglect and challenging geographic conditions, limiting their access to this human right. Therefore, Pro Zona Mazahua contributes to the fulfillment of the Sustainable Development Goals, especially to the SDG 6, Clean Water and Sanitation.
The innovation of the Rainwater Harvesting Systems lies in the fact that they are an accessible solution for everyone, even in the context of high marginalization and difficult access to the indigenous communities. This type of systems are successful due to their ease of construction, low operation and maintenance costs, and adaptation to any local environment and type of materials, which is ideal for the appropriation and replication of these projects in more indigenous households.
